How to play

RAREFIND is a daily geography game. Every question asks for a country, and almost every question has many right answers. Anyone can find one. The skill is finding one that few people think of: the rarer your answer, the more it is worth.

The daily

Every day at midnight UTC a new daily starts: five questions, the same for everyone in the world. Dailies are numbered, starting with Daily #1 on 13 October 2026.

You have 40 seconds for each question. A perfect daily scores 500 points. Once enough players have finished the same daily, your result also tells you where you stand, for example "Top 12%".

Answering a question

  1. Read the question, for example "A country that borders Brazil".
  2. Pick a country. Tap or click it on the map, or type its name in the search box and choose it from the list. Drag to move the map; pinch, scroll or use the + and − buttons to zoom. Very small countries are drawn as circles so they are easy to tap.
  3. Press Pin it. Until you pin, you can change your pick as often as you like. Once pinned, the answer is final.

If the 40 seconds run out before you pin, the question scores 0, even if a country was selected.

Then comes the reveal: every valid answer lights up on the map in its rarity colour, and a short note explains surprising answers. On the daily, you also see each country's share of the recorded attempts, once at least 20 attempts have been recorded for that question.

Points and rarity

Each valid answer has one of five rarity tiers. A wrong answer, or no answer in time, scores nothing.

Points for each rarity tier
RarityPointsWhich answers
Common10The answers most players name first
Uncommon25Answers many players think of
Rare50Answers some players find
Epic75Answers few players find
Legendary100Answers almost nobody finds
Miss0Not a valid answer, or time ran out

Five questions, up to 100 points each: 500 points at most. How rarity is worked out is explained below.

Daily, bonus games and Premium

  • Without an account: the daily, once a day.
  • With a free account: the daily plus one bonus game every day. The bonus game unlocks once you have finished the daily. Its questions are chosen for you from the whole question bank, never today's daily or a future one, and questions you have not played come first.
  • With Premium: Unlimited mode, and as many bonus games as you like, every day. Premium costs $12 a year (about $1 a month), with a 7-day free trial on your first subscription. See the terms for the details.
  • KRILLION subscribers get Premium at no extra charge: link your KRILLION account from your RAREFIND account.

An account keeps your scores, streak and history on all your devices. If you play the daily as a guest and then sign in on the same browser that day, that game is normally added to your account.

Games do not carry over: at midnight UTC everyone starts again with a new daily.

Unlimited mode

Unlimited mode is part of Premium. A dive is an endless run of questions, one after the other, with the same 40 seconds, tiers and points as everywhere else.

  • 3 lives. A wrong answer, or no answer in time, costs one life. The dive ends when the last one is gone, or when you choose End dive between two questions.
  • A legendary find wins a life back, up to 3. Rarity scores points, and in Unlimited it also keeps you going.
  • Depth is the number of questions answered in the dive; every 10 is a milestone. Your deepest dive and your best dive score are kept with your account.
  • Questions come from the whole question bank, never today's daily or a future one, never twice in the same dive, and questions you have not played yet come first.

You have one dive at a time. Leave it and come back later, on any device signed in to your account: it waits for you, but the clock keeps running on a question you leave open. A dive left alone for 24 hours is closed, and that also applies while Premium is off: if Premium ends, you can pick your dive up only if Premium is back within 24 hours of your last question. Dives never use your daily games.

Leaving and coming back

The clock is kept by our server, not by your device. If you leave during a question, its 40 seconds keep running; if they run out while you are away, that question scores 0. Questions you have not opened yet wait for you.

To continue, open RAREFIND again and press Resume, before midnight UTC. Your streak counts the days in a row on which you finished the daily.

Questions and answers

Why was my answer a miss?

Each question has a fixed list of valid answers, and our server checks your pin against it the moment you press Pin it. A miss means the country you pinned is not on that list, or the time ran out first. The usual reasons:

  • A neighbouring country was pinned by mistake. The reveal outlines the country you actually pinned.
  • The fact does not hold for that country in the sense the question uses. The note shown with the answers explains the borderline cases.
  • The pin arrived after the 40 seconds. A short grace period covers slow connections, but not more.

Do territories count?

Yes, for the country they belong to. Tapping Greenland picks Denmark, French Guiana picks France, Puerto Rico picks the United States. A country can also fit a question through one of its territories: France borders Brazil through French Guiana, so France is a valid answer to "A country that borders Brazil". Such clever answers are worth a lot, and the note says when one exists.

Which countries can I answer?

The 193 member states of the United Nations, plus Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan: 197 in all. Every other place on the map counts for the country it belongs to.

What does rarity mean, and how is it worked out?

Rarity tiers estimate how obvious an answer is for that question. They are set before play and stay fixed for that question version, so everyone answering it uses the same points. A Legendary answer can still be a popular choice in today's daily.

Rarity depends on the question. Asked for a country that has won the men's football World Cup, most people say Brazil first, so Brazil is Common there. Asked for a country where Swahili is an official language, most people think of Kenya first.

For each question, we order valid answers by their expected familiarity, then divide them into tiers from Common upwards. A question with nine or more ordinary answers uses all five tiers. A shorter list stops at Rare or Epic (Uncommon for the shortest). Answers that fit only through a territory or a technicality can receive a higher tier. This is an editorial estimate, rather than a score calculated from live player picks.

The daily's pick percentages are shown separately once at least 20 attempts have been recorded. The sample includes timeouts and updates when loaded. Those percentages help you compare choices; they do not change your score.

Tiers are set for each question in advance and are the same for everyone. The share of players who picked each country is shown for interest only and never changes your points.

Is a country always equally rare?

No. Rarity only compares the valid answers of one question. A country that comes to mind first for one question can be a rare find for another, where few people would think of it.

Do countries on two continents count for both?

Yes. Countries that span two continents, such as Russia, Turkey, Egypt or Kazakhstan, count for each continent they are in.

I think a question is wrong. What can I do?

Questions are written from public sources and checked before they are published, and corrections apply to future games. A correction never changes points already given. We do not have a monitored inbox yet, so we cannot answer individual messages.
